Acquire the Necessary Background Knowledge in Advance

Good preparation takes less time than revising an application and saves the committee considerable work. This helps to speed up the assessment process for everyone. Before submitting your application, make sure you are familiar with the following concepts:

• Personal data under the Dutch GDPR (Algemene Verordening Gegevensbescherming or AGV), for example by watching this explanatory video
• Special categories of personal data
• Anonymous, anonymised and pseudonymised data, and the differences between them
• The GDPR legal bases of public interest and consent (see also the intranet)

Seek Advice on GDPR, Privacy and Data Management in Advance

Request advice in good time, preferably before submitting your application:

• Advice from the Privacy Officer on GDPR and privacy matters
• Advice from the Data Manager on your Data Management Plan (DMP). The FETC-GW does not assess DMPs and submitting one is optional, but a DMP can be very helpful when drafting participant information sheets about the use of data.

Practise Your Application (Optional)

The FETC-H portal allows you to practice your application. This application will not be submitted, but it can help you become familiar with the application procedure.

Check beforehand…

• Whether you intend to destroy recordings after transcription, as recordings cannot be anonymised, or can only be anonymised with great difficulty
• The Checklist of ethical considerations (pdf), to support a careful ethical review of your study
• Whether you have used the correct and most up-to-date template documents
• FETC-H news and events
• The FETC-H Regulations (check which provisions apply to your research)
